Meet Our Team At Starfish Dental

Dr. Dag Zapatero

Dr. Zapatero is a graduate of The University of North Carolina School of Dentistry.  He has earned many awards and accreditations during his 30-year career in dentistry, including twice being recognized by the Journal of Dental Technology as a leader in the dental profession, and consistently named as one of "America's Top Dentists."   Dr. Zapatero is among the top 1% of general dentists to have earned their Fellowship, Mastership, and Lifelong Learning and Service Recognition Award from the Academy of General Dentistry.  Along with these achievements, Dr. Zapatero is an adjunct faculty member, the UNC School of Dentistry, and a visiting faculty and Scholar at the L.D. Pankey Institute, and a Legislative Committee member of the Virginia Dental Association.  Dr. Zapatero is most proud of his Fellowship of the prestigious American College of Dentists, which limits membership to just 3.5% of all dentists.

Elizabeth

Liz joined our practice in 2004 and quickly won her patients over with compassion and empathy. Liz grew up in Virginia Beach and earned her Bachelors of Science in Dental Hygiene degree from Old Dominion University. Liz is entering her twentieth year of practice and continues to improve her patient care through advanced education opportunities while embracing technological advancements in dentistry. Liz credits her years at Starfish Dental for allowing her to grow both personally and professionally in an environment that focuses on individual patient care over production quotas. Liz loves developing a personal connection with her patients and she would love to meet you too. Outside of the office, Liz is often traveling, staying healthy, and working on her home inside and out with her husband, Rob. Inside their home, they have two rescue cats and a very talkative parrot named Fletch.

Jennifer

Jennifer joined Starfish Dental in 2018 after a twenty-year career at the office of Dr. Albert Konikoff. Jennifer has always felt connected to the Starfish Dental family (staff members and patients) and is thrilled to be a part of it officially! It is one of Jennifer’s joys to share a moment of laughter with every patient she meets during the day while making sure their needs are met. Our patient-focused care is just one thing that makes Jennifer proud to be a Patient Care Coordinator. Jennifer is married to her favorite guy, Junior, and has two children, Rae and Jared. When she isn’t at the office, you can find Jennifer enjoying time with her family and sweet fur baby Olive. Jennifer also loves Zumba, the sunshine and singing loudly enough to be heard in the reception area of the office. She is also fluent in Español.

Leigh

Leigh roots run deepest roots in our practice.  Upon earning her Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene degree from Old Dominion University, Leigh began working for Dr. Ernest Duvall.  When Dr. Zapatero purchased the practice from Dr. Duvall in 1992, Leigh came with the office.  She has been caring for many of the same patients and their families for four decades. Leigh is held in high esteem by those who put their care in her hands. Leigh has completed advanced training in non-surgical periodontal care, and in dental anesthesia. Leigh is genuinely an excellent hygienist and dental professional. Leigh is married to Bobby, and they have a son Paul, who is also a graduate of Old Dominion University. When not at work, Leigh enjoys antiquing, reading, learning new technology, spending time with family in the Outer Banks, volunteering at her church, and traveling.

Lori

Lori was Dr. Zapatero's first hire when he opened his private practice in 1992. Lori started as a dental assistant in the early days of the practice. She then earned her dental hygiene degree from Old Dominion University, but her real love was dental assisting. Her journey in dentistry came full circle when she returned to assisting Dr. Zapatero in general patient care., but she does much more for the practice.

Lori's loyalty and dedication to her patients, and our dental practice has allowed her the opportunity of holding just about every position in the office. Patients always notice Lori's smile because they can tell she enjoys her job and her work environment. Lori is married to Steve, and they have two children, Kyle and Kacy, and a beautiful Rottweiler named Finn. During their free time, the Watts enjoys spending time in their beach house on Hatteras Island.

A healthy smile is just a click away.

A Note about Coronavirus

We want to thank each of you for your continued support and well wishes.
Dr. Zapatero has been in contact with leading dental infection control researchers.  Current studies from around the world have clearly shown that there have been ZERO transmissions of ANY diseases (bacterial or viral) linked to aerosolized particles produced during a dental procedure. NONE!  Universal precautions already in place have kept both patients and our staff safe.  We have more than a thirty-year safety track record and continuously implemented new safety control measures.  That being said, we have taken additional measures to enhance our protocols. We will continue to monitor the data and research because we understand that one day a link "MAY" occur.  Everyone's well being is our concern.
